School Rules OK?

Sue Cowley, behaviour expert, gives advice to primary school teachers on how to set rules with a class, in this pedagogy and classroom management resource.

Sue believes some schools have too many rules and warns that those drawn up in haste will be difficult to apply. She recommends a simple set of regulations that are easy for staff and pupils to understand and follow.

She visits a Birmingham primary school where the headteacher lets the pupils make the rules. Sue discovers how a good set of rules can help to create peace and harmony, and how a badly drawn-up collection of commands can lead to chaos and confusion.

She hears how rules created in consultation with pupils can deliver an effective way of working.
