Safer Schools

At a time when it is becoming increasingly common for pupils to carry weapons in schools, it is difficult to know the measures we should go to in order to create a safer learning environment. This programme assembles a panel of experts to discuss what measures are necessary and what is excessive.

Despite there being little statistical knowledge on how many weapons are in schools, should staff be equipped with personal alarms or granted the permission to use physical restraint, although the training dogma says hands-on intervention is unadvisable?

Key points from the programme:

  • A teacher who doesn't intervene when their pupils are at risk may be faced with litigation
  • Some of the worst injuries are inflicted with implements not normally considered as weapons - like pens
  • In most cases, restrainment is not the safest option
