Changes in School Leadership

Journalist Mike Baker finds out more about the changing routes into headship and discusses how schools are responding to a shortage of prospective school leaders.

Finding creative ways of addressing the difficulties faced by a shortage of prospective school leaders has become a driver for new models of headship. Schools can now share headteachers, with arrangements varying from the informal through to formally binding legal federations.

The flexibility is encouraging if you're considering a school leader role, but prospective headteachers must also ensure they hold the National Professional Qualification for Headship, as from March 2009 only NPQH graduates will be able to apply for the top jobs.
