The School Disco

mediumblue

Summary

Pupils at Howden Junior School near Goole have been set the challenge of raising funds by staging an event. Members of the school council decide to hold a disco with the theme of a ball.

They have to plan and research everything from the cost of the DJ to the refreshments on the night. The task introduces concepts of financial literacy such as outgoings, income, profit and loss.

To enforce the learning experience, deputy head Mike Sibley uses the activity as a hook for his lessons about spreadsheets. He finds that being able to relate to a 'real event' engages the children and transforms a normally dull and dry topic into an enjoyable and purposeful lesson.

With a drive to make the disco a success, the pupils grasp the importance of budgeting and an element of competition arises as they work out how to make the most money.

The pupils learn a huge amount about both finance and organising events. Watch this programme to see how the budding entrepreneurs perform on the night.

The School Disco is designed for use by teachers and subject coordinators interested in finding out how to include personal finance education into school life and the curriculum in an engaging way.

The School Disco is a continuing professional development programme.
