Secondary Curriculum Leadership

A school in Chile demonstrates the successful impact of focusing on learning rather than teaching, since the introduction of a revised secondary curriculum

The Liceo de Aplicación is a high-achieving municipal secondary school in the centre of Santiago, Chile.

Headteacher Eusebio Milla believes this change in focus has impacted on teaching practice across the school, with teachers now trying to accommodate different learning styles, rather than simply imparting knowledge to passive students.

This has led to a whole-school strategy to support teachers' professional development revolving around a more collaborative approach. Subject teachers now meet on a regular basis to share their experiences.

Language teacher Jorge Montt, believes that the new sense of teamwork in the language department is one of the main reasons for school's improving language results.
